JUNK is the brilliant new production from the Flying Fruit Fly Circus, inspired by regional childhood stories of the 1940’s, touring in 2018 and available to tour in 2019. Set in a Junkyard, 17 highly-skilled young performers use their imagination to transform household trash into magical landscapes and ingenious apparatus on which to perform their breathtaking circus skills, reflecting on the childhood of today and questioning the importance of risk taking and creative play.
“Dynamic, high-energy fun with inventive and surprising choreography”
Set in modern-day regional Australia, JUNK tells the exciting story of a young boy who stumbles upon a condemned junkyard and it’s unlikely inhabitants: fun, free-range kids from the 1940’s. Together, they transform the junk into a wondrous playground for the boy to learn how to play, take risks, trust his instincts and surrender to his imagination.
Forbidden by his father to enter the junkyard, in his father's absence the boy is drawn into the junkyard and his new accomplices. With JUNK’s creative questions commenting on the over-supervision of children & the lack of child driven play, circus with its risk taking attributes and puppetry in its transformational imagery becomes the perfect physical and visual language in which to explore these ideas. It reminds us of a time when a lack of technology and a period of hard economics did not limit the creativity of children and the amount of fun they could dream up.
Featuring an ingenious set evoking an abandoned country junkyard, JUNK melds shadow play, puppetry, dance and storytelling with traditional and innovative contemporary circus skills.
The Flying Fruit Fly Circus is one of the world’s leading youth arts companies, both a celebrated producer of contemporary circus-based theatre for young people and a national centre of arts training excellence, catering primarily for young people from age 8 to 18.
In 2014, the company’s 35th year, its hit show Circus Under My Bed performed triumphantly at Sydney Opera House and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, while another major production Control Alt Delete was on tour to 12 towns and cities around the nation. In 2015 the Flying Fruit Fly Circus returned to the Sydney Opera House with Circus Under My Bed by popular demand and performed seasons in Albury, Canberra and internationally in Istanbul as part of the Australia in Turkey Festival. The company’s most recent production JUNK premiered at the Cube Wodonga in 2016 before performing at the Sydney Opera House and Arts Centre Melbourne to sold-out audiences.
