Girls With Altitude

directed by Anni Davey

Currently in development and building on their recent successes at Sydney Festival and beyond, Girls with Altitude will deliver everything you expect from the formidable Fruities – humour, breathtaking skills, and boundless youthful energy – as well as a 17-strong all-female cast and projected animations from cartoonist Judy Horacek.

“Arguably, Australia’s most influential circus company…never have I felt so much love for a show and its performers radiating out from around me”

Richard Watts, Arts Hub

Girls with Altitude is an all-female aerials-based production using traditional and innovative apparatus developed by the Flying Fruit Fly Circus. It mixes the real life talents of Australia’s best young circus acrobats with interactive projections of Judy Horocek’s illustrations. Its bold, edgy and electrifying.

Increasingly young women are taking the lead in rejecting the apathy and inaction of the incumbent generation, questioning the prevailing politic and demanding real change. Cartoonist Judy Horacek, works with themes of environment, equality and the existential angst of the modern age, all explored gently with a sharp wit.

In combining these illustrations with circus, our young acrobats reframe, reinvent and propose new perspectives on the future of their generation while celebrating the Fruities famously exuberant mix of youthful energy and high level circus skills.

The Flying Fruit Fly Circus is developing this new work for festival, metropolitan and regional touring. It is the second major work to be created under the Artistic Directorship of Anni Davey, following the public and critical success of Back in the Big Top in Albury and Time Flies at Sydney Festival.

REVIEWS

"Australian circus is some of the best in the world and a fair share of that talent can be traced back to the Flying Fruit Fly Circus… quality family theatre that hits the mark and never compromises circus technique… Fruit Flies, you rock!” Herald Sun

"Flying Fruit Fly Circus was Australia’s first world-famous youth circus – and it’s still the  best... the circus we know and love for its young performers (aged 8-18), rural base, clever  ideas, expertise and sense of humour." Arts Hub

"The Flying Fruit Fly Circus may be composed of young people who are still in the process  of learning the craft, but they deliver such a fine-tuned performance which promises  foreseeable greatness, surely to be envied by vintage artists in the field now.” Australian  Stage

“Dazzling and lyrical. Quick, book and treat the whole family.” Sydney Arts Guide

“Gasp inducing acrobatic feats… the performers captivate and inspire, and seem destined to join the ranks of the grown-ups.” Daily Telegraph

FROM THE COMPANY

Building on our recent success, Girls with Altitude will deliver everything presenters and audiences expect from the Flying Fruit Fly Circus - humour, breathtaking skills and boundless youthful energy. It also pushes our boundaries with a 17-strong all-female cast on stage (aged from 10-18) and the use of projected animations from cartoonist Judy Horacek (acclaimed illustrator of Mem Fox’s book The Green Sheep). This will be our first touring production since March 2019, a family spectacular suitable for kids from 6-106!
