Echo Mapping

Co-created by Azzam Mohamed & Jack Prest

Azzam & Jack have extraordinary understanding, thanks to their six years' collaboration, and this is the third of their four works together. Azzam is an exquisite performer, and a rising star, whose debut full length work as choreographer, Katma (PYT Fairfield, also with Jack as composer) was the hit of Sydney Festival 2025.

ABOUT THE SHOW

A duet for sound and body.

Echo Mapping is a thrilling, joyful sound/movement duet performed by longtime collaborators, electronic musician/composer Jack Prest & street dancer/choreographer Azzam Mohamed. It is about knowing when to listen, when to respond; when to lead, when to follow; when to claim space, when to yield it; and most importantly, when to share it.

Jack’s live score moves from transcendent textures to thundering beats to ethereal trumpet, while Azzam performs both voice & body: from commanding stillness to fluid yet intense choreography, singing Sudanese melodies recorded, looped & manipulated by Jack.

“This was such a special program, a total soul enriching experience up close & personal in the small spaces at 107 Projects.”

Justine Shih Pearson, Artistic Director, PACT

Raw creativity and unpretentious process are the backbone of Echo Mapping, stripped back to the simplest elements, no sets, no costumes and minimal production; the sole focus is on the sound and movement.

You’re up close to the action, performed in the round, every tiny moment magnified, and immersed in the visceral sonic atmosphere they create, in a shared experience leaving you feeling transformed, exhilarated, refreshed.

Audience Engagement

Azzam is an experienced, warm and charismatic teacher and workshop facilitator, sought after to run workshops in various street dance styles & African dance, everywhere from Destructive Steps (street dance festival) to Sydney Dance Company. Together, Jack and Azzam can also share their unique approach to collaborative performance making, in artist talks, workshops, or bespoke processes with local artists.

“I’d seen this impressive movement/sound work in a shorter version earlier this year in Redfern. This longer 60-minute version at AGNSW is even better & confirms that producer Harley Stumm has an eye and ear for what contemporary performances can achieve. Contemplation, concentration & reflection are evident throughout as the movement & accompanying music unfolds in changing tempos, stillness & energy.”
- Robert Love, former Director, Riverside Theatres Parramatta -
