From the makers of In Between Two comes an immersive theatrical experience for the senses. A sell-out hit at Sydney Festival, five stellar storyteller-cooks reveal the stories and secrets of dishes significant in their lives. And at the end of each story, the audience tastes the dish. Truly double delicious!
"...a lush and evocative series of skilfully narrated performances, tantalising all the senses whilst also delivering moments of real human connection." ★★★★1/2
Double Delicious is a sumptuous storytelling and culinary experience. Combining food and theatre with immersive visual and sound design, five storytellers reveal the secrets of dishes that are significant in their lives as they share compelling tales of family, upheaval, loss and legacy.
These are bitter, sweet, sour and salty stories from the heart, infused with memory and lived experience. At the end of each story, the audience tastes the dish, completing their experience of the story just revealed.
Food is central to so many important moments in our lives, it’s a natural entrée to stories that are enthralling, insightful, and illuminating. We’ve embraced as a motif for Double Delicious, the incomplete circle, symbolic of everything and nothing, where our storytellers reveal lived experiences, ripe with wisdom yet open-ended with possibility.
With a sprinkling of theatre magic spice, this multi-sensory experience is intended to leave a mark – like the stain of a coffee cup – an indelible reminder of something savoured and unforgettable, evidence of our shared humanity.

"...deeply moving and gently provocative, turning focus to Australia’s multiculturalism and the way that notions of authenticity are shaped by our world." Ben Neutze, Time Out
"Double Delicious was a mouth-watering night of great food and banter. We had all come together as a community and experienced a real treat: some fun and heartfelt storytelling wrapped up in excellent food from diverse cultures. This show had been a satiating and satisfying experience- a flavourful blend of the best things about food and theatre. Yum!" ★★★★1/2 Natalie Salvo, The AU Review.
"...a thoroughly delightful celebration of a culinary coming of age." Reviews By Judith.
"Five wonderful storytellers take turns bringing to life a tale from their past, all while slicing, dicing and enticing." Alana Kaye, Theatre Now.
CAAP’s productions are culturally diverse, multidisciplinary and highly accessible. Audiences love them, but getting them into the theatre in the first place is the challenge. A one-size fits all marketing strategy doesn’t always work for culturally diverse work.
To address this, CAAP and AOT are looking for several presenters who program Double Delicious for 2022 to partner with us on an audience development pilot initiative in 2021. We want to work with you to research and develop new ways to develop new audiences and engage new local communities.
The initiative may involve a new approach to developing digital support materials, like mini documentaries, or pre-tour community engagement activities like a cooking demonstration or storytelling workshop from one of the storytellers that takes place well in advance of the tour. We want to collaborate with our presenter partners on coming up with creative solutions that work for your specific community.
