Gravity & Other Myths

Directed by Darcy Grant

High-octane physical virtuosity, Backbone tests the limits of strength: physical, emotional, individual and collective. Sexy but sincere, raw yet utterly disciplined, Backbone is proof you can't do the impossible without spending a little sweat. Genre-defying circus, as you’ve never seen it before!

“Magnetic world premiere, a perfect combination of fluidity, mettle and danger...The sheer strength of body and character needed to round out this frenzied performance demonstrates a discipline and camaraderie, rarely seen on stage. Simply a joy to watch.”

This frenetic celebration of human interconnectedness tests the limits of strength: physical, emotional, individual and collective. In less than a decade, staged with a deceptively DIY aesthetic and dispensing of trickery and distraction, this is circus that goes straight for the jugular and leaves no viewer unmoved. Its athletic appeal is run through with a conceptual brilliance that elevates it to a new level.

A cast of 10 acrobats casually chat as they clean up and arrange the space, training circus skills in between while the musicians warm up, creating a chaotic soundtrack in the background. This seemingly haphazard start is quickly dismantled into order. What follows is a celebration of physical prowess intertwined with moving imagery and intricate choreography, highlighting strength in every form. This allows the audience to draw clear associations from the images created to their personal experience, encouraging meaningful connections between audience and performer.

Nominated for 3 Helpmann Awards (2017) including; Best New Australian Work, Best Choreography, and Best Lighting Design Backbone will charm and disarm you.

“A glorious flow of action and reaction ... The acrobatics are eloquent and sensational, full of original twists that spell out a new language.” ★★★★★ Advertiser

“The performers’ agility and stamina are beyond impressive. The trust they must have in each other and their absolute focus and understanding of limits is nothing short of spectacular. This is a new kind of circus.” The Barefoot Review

“Circus, as you’ve never seen it before, pushed to its conceptual and cerebral limits. A genre-defying, thought-provoking, visual extravaganza ... so intensely beautiful it makes you proud to be human.” In Daily

“The excitement of circus at its best combined with the grace and choreographic line of dance, and the magical undercurrents of good theatre.” ★★★★★ The Sydney Morning Herald

''Cirque du Soleil with a fistful of grit" UK Express

Their work utilizes an honest approach to performance to create shows with a focus on human connection and acrobatic virtuosity.

Backbone is a piece of devised Circus that examines strength. Honestly, ironically and personally. When asked to direct Backbone I could hardly contain my excitement. This company of self-made success is young, raw, unpretentious, and hungry for the next challenge. To create strong and deliberate meaning. It's a show that anyone from any place at any age can access. An unpretentious, physically virtuosic, meaningful piece of Circus.
